‘The School of Athens’ canvas print donated to High School by former superintendent

Athens Area High School was recently gifted by former superintendent Doug Ulkins a large print on canvas of “The School of Athens”. Mr. Ulkins gave the gift in recognition of the excellent arts department throughout all the Athens Area School district with the intention of making great art known to student with the “local” touch of the School of Athens within Athens Area High School.

The School of Athens is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. In the painting, the most famous philosophers of ancient times move within an imposing Renaissance architecture. Some of these are easily recognizable. In the center Plato points upwards with a finger and holds his book Timeus in his hand, flanked by Aristotle with Ethics; Other great thinkers of various eras include Pythagoras, Diogenes, Heracleitus, and many others. Dr. Wales’ art classes are currently researching the painting and creating projects inspired by it.
