Georgetown professor: Violence not intended when calling for Iran strike on US base

Shortly before the Iranian attack on a U.S. military base, a Georgetown professor posted that he hoped there would be a strike, later stating that violence was not his intent.

On his X account, Professor Jonathan Brown posted: “I’m not an expert, but I assume Iran could still get a bomb easily. I hope Iran does some symbolic strike on a base, then everyone stops.”

Brown is Georgetown University’s Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization in the School of Foreign Service, according to his school bio.

“I’m surprised this is what these FDD/Hasbara people have been auto-erotically asphyxiating themselves for all these years,” Brown wrote.

Brown additionally wrote that, “ironically, the main takeaways (in my non-expert opinion, and I’m happy to be corrected) from all this have nothing to do with a US attack: 1) Iran can take a licking; 2) if Israel attacks Iranian cities, it gets [f—d] up pretty bad. I mean I’ve been shocked at the damage Iranian missiles caused; 3) despite his best efforts, Reza Pahlavi HVAC repair services still only third best in Nova.”

Brown’s comments followed the U.S.’s attack on three Iranian nuclear facilities Saturday night, effectively obliterating “the Islamic regime’s capabilities,” as The Center Square reported.

Neither Brown nor Georgetown media relations have responded to The Center Square’s request for comment.

Monday morning, however, Brown posted on X: “I deleted my previous tweet because a lot of people were interpreting it as a call for violence. That’s not what I intended.”

“I have two immediate family members in the US military who’ve served abroad and wouldn’t want any harm to befall American soldiers,” Brown posted.

A day after Brown posted his Sunday wishes for a strike on X, Iran did indeed strike a U.S. military base in Qatar, as The Center Square reported.

President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social account Monday afternoon: “Iran has officially responded to our Obliteration of their Nuclear Facilities with a very weak response, which we expected, and have very effectively countered.”

Trump said that “there have been 14 missiles fired – 13 were knocked down, and 1 was ‘set free,’ because it was headed in a nonthreatening direction.”

“I am pleased to report that NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done,” Trump said.

According to Professor Brown’s bio, some works he has written include Slavery and Islam; Islam & Blackness; and The Canonization of al-Bukhari and Muslim: The Formation and Function of the Sunni Hadith Canon.

In the online description of Slavery and Islam, the claim that American Founding Fathers “slept with their slaves” is compared to “when ISIS revived sex slavery, justifying it with verses from the Quran and the practice of Muhammad.”

“Every major religion and philosophy once condoned or approved of slavery,” the description said.

Georgetown is a private Catholic and Jesuit university located in Washington D.C., as stated on its website.
