U.S. House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., wants the U.S. Secret Service director to appear for a hearing before Congress after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday.
Comer posted the request on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I have already contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and am also calling on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing,” Comer said. “The Oversight Committee will send a formal invitation soon. My prayers are with President Trump and the victims of the assassination attempt at today’s rally in Pennsylvania.
“I thank the brave Secret Service members who put their lives at risk to protect President Trump and for the American patriots in the audience who helped others who were hurt. Political violence in all forms is unamerican and unacceptable. There are many questions and Americans demand answers.”
The request comes in the wake of an assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pa. The Republican presumptive nominee was wounded in the ear. One rally attendee was killed, and two others in the crowd were wounded.
Secret Service agents were able to kill the unidentified shooter, who was staged on a nearby rooftop outside of the event.
After the assassination attempt, billionaire businessman and owner of X Elon Musk said on the platform, “The head of the Secret Service and the leader of this security detail should resign.”
