Leading members of the U.S. House of Representatives spoke about immigration and crime during the second night of the Republican National Convention, themed “Make America Safe Again,” in Milwaukee, Wis.

House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik (NY-21) spoke first.

“Under Joe Biden, the American people have suffered crisis after crisis, from the Biden border, the most wide open border in our nation’s history…to Biden’s violent crime crisis fueled by Democrats, pro criminal sanctuary cities and defund the police policies like we have seen in my home state of New York,” Stefanik said.

She promised that Trump will restore internal order and national security, and support “our most precious ally, Israel.”

“President Trump will once again deliver the most secure border in our nation’s history and unleash the American economy, and he will bring peace through strength as commander in chief, standing with our allies and causing our enemies to fear us,” Stefanik said. “President Trump has done it before, and he will do it again.”

House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., praised the accomplishments of Republicans in Congress, including passing bills to tame inflation, enhance border security, and investigate Chinese businesses.

“The Democrats disastrous record on crime, trade and regulation has ruined the lives of countless Minnesotans. When Minneapolis was in flames and businesses were in ruins, Kamala Harris encouraged and enabled the criminals and the rioters,” said Emmer, referring to the Black Lives Matter riots in the summer of 2020. “Donald Trump stands with the people and the police, our men and women in blue, not with the criminals and the rioters.”

House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., pledged that once in the White House, Trump will “restore American power and peace” by boosting energy production, lowering taxes, rebuilding the military, and securing the border.

“On the border, Biden and Harris opened it up to the entire world,” Scalise said. “President Trump and the Republican majority will repass HR2, the strongest border security bill in decades. We will lock down the border, and yes, we will finish building the wall.”

The crowd responded with chants of “build the wall, build the wall!”

House Speaker Mike Johnson wrapped up his coworkers’ remarks with a call for unity among all Americans after the assassination attempt Saturday on Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. He proceeded to call the Democratic Party “the party of self-destruction,” and the Republican Party “the law and order team.”

“America can’t risk four more years of Joe Biden’s weakness that has invited so much aggression by our enemies,” Johnson said. “We can’t survive the dramatic increases in violence, crime and drugs that the Democrats’ policies have brought up on our community. And we cannot allow the many millions of illegal aliens they’ve allowed across our borders to harm our citizens, drain our resources, or disrupt our elections.”

Johnson promised that a Trump presidency will reverse those trends.

“The Republican Party stands for the foundational truths that made America the greatest nation in the history of the world,” Johnson said. “Standing arm in arm, we will Make America Safe Again.”
