Chemung County Sheriff’s Office alerts residents about an increase in calls from individual(s) posing as a representative from the Social Security Administration (SSA). These calls are going to both cellular phones and residential phones. These calls are occurring more frequently due to income tax season. Sheriff’s Office advises individuals not to disclose any personal information whatsoever over the phone for any reason. If you get an unsolicited call from the Social Security, or other similar scams where you are threatened with arrest, simply hang up and end the call.
If you have questions or want to verify a call, please call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.
