A school bus from the Chenango Valley School District was involved in an accident around 8:30 a.m. this morning on Phelps Street in Port Dickinson. The bus was transporting 23 students who attend the Port Dickinson Elementary School. Three students were examined on the scene by Broome ambulance medical personnel. No one was seriously injured.
A posting on the Chenango Valley’s district website read: “As per our district procedures, all students involved were evaluated by the school nurse and/or EMT and returned to the elementary school. The parents/guardians of all students involved were contacted. Thank you to all of our CV staff and local emergency responders for their assistance and support at the scene.”
According to a news release this afternoon from the Broome County Sheriff’s Office, a subsequent investigation determined a Ford SUV slid down an ice-covered driveway and into the path of the school bus. Both the school bus operator and SUV operator attempted to avoid the collision. The front passenger corner of the school bus struck the front driver’s side corner of the SUV, causing damage to both. Both damaged vehicles were driven from the scene.
The children were moved to another bus and transported to the school. At the school, the children were again accessed by a school nurse. No traffic citations were issued.
