The race for the 23rd Congressional District Democratic primary is too close to call. Cyber-security expert Tracy Mitrano and retired U.S. Air Force colonel Max Della Pia of Owego were neck-and-neck all night. This morning they are separated by only a couple dozen votes with all precincts reporting. Della Pia picked up 7,022 votes, but Mitrano is sitting on 6,996.
Della Pia claimed victory in the race, but both candidates are expecting a recount. The winner will face off against Republican incumbent Tom Reed in the general election in November.
The 23rd Congressional District stretches from the Broome-Tioga County line, all the way west to Lake Erie includes all of Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins and Yates counties, and parts of Ontario and Tioga counties. There were three other candidates all earning fewer votes than Mitrano and Della Pia.
