Heavy rain Tuesday night caused flooding in Broome and Tioga Counties.

Tioga County Legislative Chair Marte Sauerbrey declared a STATE OF EMERGENCY at 8:30 Tuesday evening for Tioga County due to the on-going rain event. Tioga County Director of Emergency Services Michael Simmons and Tioga County Sheriff Gary Howard also advised no unnecessary travel until further notice on the roads due to flooded roadways.  Travel is not prohibited but it is strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel so the road crews can assess damage and make repairs.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar’s office also ordered a “No Unnecessary Travel Order” Tuesday night.  The emergency order said that there should be no unnecessary travel due to flash flooding.  This is in addition to the State of Emergency that had already been put into effect Tuesday morning. Garnar encouraged residents to monitor weather forecasts and road conditions.
