(Vestal, NY) – Vestal police have reported two people were killed late Monday in a head-on crash on Route 434, just east of Binghamton University’s main campus. Just before 11:00pm on Monday, August 8, Vestal police responded to a motor vehicle collision on Route 434 between Murray Hill Road and Plaza Drice.
The initial investigation determined a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Stephan Moran, 31, of Binghamton, was traveling east in the west lane and collided head-on with a 2016 Nissan sedan occupied by Alfred and Paula LaTessa, of Johnson City.
Mr. LaTessa was pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs. LaTessa had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the Vestal Fire Department, using the Jaws of Life. She was rushed to UHS Wilson Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Moran was transported by ambulance to UHS Wilson with non-life-threatening injuries.
Members of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to assist with an Accident Reconstruction Investigation, which is continuing and no charges have been filed at this time.
Along with the Sheriff’s Office and the Vestal Fire Department, Vestal police were assisted by the Binghamton University Law Enforcement Division, Vestal EMS and the NYS Department of Transportation.
