A standoff that lasted over nine hours ended peacefully in Chenango County early Thursday.
Sheriff’s deputies and a state trooper were called to a home on State Highway 23 in the Town of Plymouth for reports of a man who was threatening suicide. The man was allegedly holding a rifle to his head.
The sheriff’s office says the deputies began negotiating with the man, but he broke them off. Seven hours later, the negotiations continued. The man peacefully surrendered about two and a half hours after that.
He was taken to the hospital for a mental health evaluation.
The sheriff’s office says criminal charges may be filed.
