New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he won’t stop about 900 layoffs of state workers that were ordered by former Gov. David Paterson. The layoffs began on Saturday.
On the day of his inauguration, Cuomo also said he will let a temporary income tax increase on wealthier New Yorkers end as scheduled.
The temporary, three-year income tax increase on New Yorkers making $200,000 or more a year is scheduled to end in a year.
Cuomo defies many of his fellow Democrats in the Legislature by saying he won’t support continuing the tax.
He says continuing that temporary tax would be a new tax and the state can’t add any new taxes.
The state faces more than $10 billion in deficits and declining revenue.
