The Athens Area Education Association announced yesterday that they will begin their strike today. The announcement comes after the education association and the Athens Area School Board could not reach an agreement on teacher contracts over the weekend. Athens Area School District teachers have been working without a contract since August of 2013.
The school district is still providing lunches for students while the strike is underway. Students can pick up a bagged lunch at:
-the Athens Township fire hall
-Totem Park in Ulster
-Bentley Creek Wesleyan Church
-the East Smithfield Village Green
-the Valley Playland in Athens Borough
This all comes after the Sayre Area Education Association continues their strike which began last week. As the strike at the Sayre Area School District continues, Seniors are asked to report to school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week to meet the number of days required by the State of Pennsylvania for graduation. Seniors are also asked to report to school on Saturday, April 30th. If seniors do not report, their graduation date could be pushed back. High school seniors should meet in the high school cafeteria during these days, where they will stay from 8am until 3pm.
