The Athens Area School district is reporting an approximated $12,000 reduction in delinquent school lunch charges. At the beginning of the school year, $14,000 in school lunch charges were still owed to the district. Since enacting a new policy though that amount has shrunk to about $1,200.
The new policy allows for up to $6.50 in unpaid charges to accumulate on a student’s lunch account, after that, action will be taken. For elementary school students, an alternative lunch of either a peanut butter and jelly or cheese sandwich is offered. For middle and high school students, once they reach $6.50 in unpaid lunch charges, they can no longer receive a school lunch.
