With tax season here, officials say New Yorkers should be aware of tax collection scams. State tax and consumer protection officials say that scammers will call people claiming to be the Internal Revenue Service or the state tax department, and demand immediate payments. Officials say New Yorkers need to be very cautious about providing personal information or making payments in response to telephone calls. There are also email “phishing” scams in which taxpayers receive emails with the IRS logo claiming to be from the “Taxpayer Advocate Service”. The email will ask taxpayers to resolve an issue with their 2013 filing by clicking on a link, and the webpage then asks for personal information.
