The Athens Area School District reminded the community about an anonymous tipline that is available following the recent online threats towards schools in the Twin Tiers.
Here is the complete statement from Athens Superintendent Dr. Craig Stage:
Good afternoon,
Over the last 24-48 hours, a social media post has been circulating in our region that identified a non-school specific threat. This has understandably created a high level of concern within the communities served by the Athens Area School District (AASD). We have been closely monitoring announcements and messages released by neighboring districts and local law enforcement agencies. It was very quickly determined that these posts do not present a credible threat and are part of a nationwide swatting hoax.
When this type of threat and situation happens we have a policy, procedure, and protocol that we follow which includes convening our threat assessment team. Please refer to our website to learn about what types of threats can occur and who is on the threat assessment team. The team is made up of professionals who are highly trained in their field to collect, analyze, and determine appropriate action and next steps to take based on the nature of the threat.
We were immediately made aware of these social media posts circulating in our AASD community, but also learned quickly that they were wholly unsubstantiated and not credible. I am only releasing this statement because of the numerous calls and requests for information about the alleged social media threat. Our School Resource Officers (SROs) and Principals have been on this from the beginning and will continue to track down and investigate any social media, text message, or verbal/written threat in relation to school violence or self-harm. Despite the lack of credibility, these posts have created a level of concern that has resulted in calls to school offices and an increase in families signing their students out of school. I have been in constant communication with our principals and continue to receive updates on what is taking place in our schools.
As a precautionary measure, we will have an increased presence of staff in and around our schools today. This includes our School Resource Officers (SROs) and additional patrols from local law enforcement agencies. These measures are designed to provide an extra layer of security and reassurance for our students, staff, and families.
We greatly appreciate the vigilance of many in our communities, especially our students. Your attentiveness has helped increase our awareness of what is taking place on social media. I want to take this moment to remind everyone about Pennsylvania’s Safe2Say Something tip line. This anonymous reporting system is an invaluable tool for students, staff, and community members to report potential threats or safety concerns. We encourage all students to continue using Safe2Say Something when they see or hear something concerning. Your diligence in using this resource helps keep our schools safe.

While it’s unfortunate that social media can be used so easily to create alarm and fear, it is the reality we face in today’s digital age. Please be assured that we continue to work diligently to provide a safe environment for your children. Their safety is our primary concern and guides all the decisions we make.
Once again, I want to express our deepest gratitude to several groups who have been instrumental in addressing this situation:
Firstly, to our students who quickly alerted the district about these concerning posts, whether through direct communication or the Safe2Say Something tip line. Your prompt action demonstrates the strength of our school community and the effectiveness of our safety protocols.
Secondly, to our area law enforcement agencies who have sacrificed numerous hours to investigate these threats thoroughly. Your dedication to our safety is truly appreciated.
Lastly, to our administration and school staff who have worked tirelessly for days to investigate these issues and concerns. Your commitment to our students’ well-being is commendable.
We have and always will stay diligent as a school district. It’s unfortunate that these types of issues have become a common part of education, distracting from the learning process and making everyone feel on edge and unsafe. I encourage parents, guardians, and all adults to support schools, school leaders, and law enforcement officials in their efforts to keep schools safe from harm.
I also want to make a heartfelt plea to all adults and caregivers: please continue to talk to your children – every day. Open, ongoing communication is vital in these challenging times.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact your building principal or my office. Together, we can ensure the safety and well-being of our school community.
Thank you
Craig
