The Bradford County Commissioners made a major donation to the Athens’ 5th grade Odyssey of the Mind team before they head to the World Finals later this month.

The team from Lynch-Bustin Elementary School punched its ticket to the World Finals at Michigan State University with a second-place finish at the state competition last month.

The team of Celia Bennett, Lydia Swingle, Cecelia Shangraw, Maddison Campbell, Easton Hubbard, Jacob Cobb and Tyler Horton along with their advisor Erica Greer will compete in Worlds from May 21 through May 24.

The World Finals will feature teams from across the United States as well as Germany, Japan, China, Canada and other countries.

The county commissioners approved a $12,500 donation for the Athens team at their meeting last week.

The entire trip is expected to cost the team $20,000, with the rest of the funds being covered by donations from local businesses and community members as well as a recent chicken BBQ fundraiser.
