SAYRE, Pa. – As Guthrie observes the anniversary of caring for its first COVID patients, we reflect on the dedication and commitment of our staff during a very challenging pandemic year. Over the past 365 days, Guthrie has cared for 1,258 COVID inpatients.
Miriam Martin, RN, Intensive Care Unit, Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital said, “There’s a lot of words to describe the past year, and the whole experience is often hard to talk about. It was the hardest nursing I’ve done to date in my entire nursing career.”
Sara Hollett, Registered Respiratory Therapist, Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, Towanda Campus said, “If you would have asked me a year ago if I would be sitting here and we’d still be dealing with this COVID pandemic, there’s no way I would have thought this. But I think we have a great team here at Guthrie and I’m proud of where we have come since this started and I think we are prepared for whatever is thrown our way.”
Guthrie has seen a decline in the number of COVID inpatients in its hospitals and has administered more than 45,000 doses of the vaccine throughout its system, continuing to work to meet community vaccination needs.

Dr. David Ristedt, Chief Medical Officer, Guthrie Cortland Hospital said, “Once we get the nation vaccinated and we can get back to normalcy to the greatest extent possible, I think we’re going to all breathe a collective sigh of relief.”
