A heat wave will hit the Twin Tiers this week with temperatures expected to be in the high 90s starting on Tuesday.
High humidity will make it feel like it’s over 100 degrees.
The heat wave is expected to last through Friday. State officials are urging residents to take steps to stay cool as the extreme heat enters the area.
Some of those steps include drinking plenty of water, limiting outdoor activities, installing air conditioners, covering windows that receive morning or afternoon sun and setting up fans to increase air flow. Do not rely on electric fans as your main source of cooling as when temperatures rise above 90 degrees they do not prevent heat-related illnesses.
If you don’t have access to air conditioning within your home, identify free locations in your neighborhood where you can go to stay cool.
Check on vulnerable individuals. Ensure that children, the elderly and pets are kept cool and hydrated.
