The NTL Youth Boys Basketball League will have their season-ending tournament this Saturday March 8th in Towanda.
Fourth, fifth and sixth grade teams from Athens, NEB, Troy, Grace Christian Academy, St Agnes, Wyalusing, Towanda and Waverly will play beginning at 9 a.m. in both gyms at Towanda High School, the Towanda Elementary gym, and St Agnes.
The tournament, in addition to being the culmination of the youth basketball season, has a very special cause this year.
The tournament will be held in memory and in honor of Tim Shaw.
Tim passed away in December after a brave fight against cancer. Tim leaves behind his wife Jennifer, and three children Patrick, Lizzie, and Molly.
Tim Shaw was a longtime PIAA official and friend to many sports enthusiasts. Tim was certified to officiate in basketball, football, baseball, softball and volleyball. In addition to the high school level, Tim officiated countless youth sports, including this tournament for many years.
Tim was always willing to help so our area youth could play games. It would be fair to say that Tim officiated more games (especially youth games) than any other person in the NTL in the past two decades.
The NTL East Chapter of Officials, which includes many members of Tim’s family and friends, is going to donate their time and talents to officiate the tournament for free on Saturday. The NTL Youth Boys Basketball League has graciously agreed to take the money that would be used towards officials’ fees and make a donation to the “Shaw Education Fund.” This is an account that has been set up at Guthrie FCU to help with Tim and Jen’s children’s education.
If you would like to see some great basketball, stop down to any gym in Towanda between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. The family and the NTL Officials would love to see you supporting our future NTL High School Basketball stars.
There will be jars available at each gym for anyone interested in donating.
In addition, if interested checks for the “Shaw Education Fund” can be sent to Guthrie FCU 104 N Elmer St Sayre, PA 18840.
