On Friday, June 20, at 8 p.m., Stephane Wrembel, arrives at the Susquehanna Summer Solstice Festival. With his band, The Django Experiment, he brings the distinctive Gypsy jazz sound of the late Django Reinhardt to the Endless Mountains.
Stephane Wrembel, a native of Fountainbleau, France, now resides in Maplewood, New Jersey. He has been called one of the world’s most celebrated guitarists. His unique sound blends jazz with Gypsy swing. The New York Times called him “Perhaps the most creative improviser in Gypsy jazz today.”
Although you might not recognize his name, you will recognize his distinctive style heard in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris (2011). The Academy award-winning film’s theme song is Wrembel’s Bistro Fada. He performed the song live at the 2012 Academy Awards. Music journalist, Mike Levine, says, “Wrenbel’s guitar skills are prodigious. He can fire off lightning-fast melodies and solos or play sensitive, slow passages…His playing is so authentic, it easily transports you to a Paris club in the 1930s.”
Stephane Wrembel’s June 20th appearance under the tent at the historic grounds of French Azilum will highlight the Susquehanna Summer Solstice Festival’s celebration of a variety of musical genres: blues, jazz, swing, country, and American folk. Performances by internationally renowned acts and local and regional bands round out the Festival’s weekend shows.
A plein air (out-of-doors) painting competition will be the core of the week-long Festival. Artists from throughout the northeast will set up their easels to capture the beauty of towns and villages within 35 miles of French Azilum beginning on June 16, 2025. Over $4,000 in Plein air prizes will be announced on Friday, June 20 at 3:30 p.m. as Happy Hour kicks off the weekend festival. Immediately following will be concerts by Bluestone Revival, Uncle Stosh and the Hardcore Pears, Mark Woodyatt and Vanishing Point, and headliner Stephane Wrembel.
