Towanda Borough Police Chief Randy Epler has announced that he will retire in June.
According to The Daily Review, Epler made the announcement at the Towanda Borough Council meeting on Monday.
Despite his plan to retire, Epler said he is hoping to continue to work for the department for the next two years through the Deferred Retirement Option Plan.
In the Deferred Retirement Option Plan, the chief’s monthly benefit payments will be deposited into an interest-bearing account and will be paid in a lump sum upon termination from employment.
Epler said this plan would ensure a smooth transition for his future successor. The borough council would need to approve the Deferred Retirement Option Plan.
Epler joined the department as a part-time officer in 1999 before becoming full time in 2001. He became the officer in charge in October of 2011 before becoming police chief in December of that year.
