Voters decide contested races in the Valley

Voters took to the polls on Tuesday to determine who would be on the general election ballot in November, including many contested municipal races in the Valley.

In Athens Borough, Andrea Gentile beat out Katherine Chandler by a 112 to 59 count to earn the Republican nomination for tax collector. There was no candidate on the Democratic side, but there were 40 write-in votes.

Todd Babcock ran unopposed on the Republican side for Athens Borough Mayor, with no one running as a Democrat.

There are three open spots on the borough council, but only two people were on the ballot. Sharon Sporn on the Democratic side and Joanne Polzella on the Republican.

In Athens Township, Republican Bonnie Petruschak will take on Democrat Rosemary Firestine for the 6-year seat on the board of supervisors in November.

Democrat Michael Freeland and Republican Paul Kelly will face off for the 2-year seat on the board of supervisors.

The three-way Republican race for Litchfield Supervisor went to Robert Campbell with 40 percent of the vote. He beat out Mark Allis with 30 percent and Timothy Shady with 28 percent. There was no Democrat running, but there were 13 write-in votes.

In Sayre, Henry Farley ran unopposed on the Democatic side for Mayor. No one ran as a Republican, but there were 66 write-in votes.

Republicans Jessie Dekar, James Bentley and James Daly ran for the three spots on the November ballot. No Democrats ran in the primary, but there were 46 write-in votes.

Amy Murrelle ran unopposed to retain her spot as tax collector.
