Senator Fred Akshar held a press conference this morning to announce that 24 state grants totaling $320,000 will be awarded to police and fire agencies in his district. The largest grants were awarded for $50,000 each to the Johnson City and Norwich Police Departments. JC will use the money for body cameras and computer upgrades. The Tioga County and Broome County Sheriff’s Departments will each receive $25,000 grants, while $15,000 has been awarded to A New Hope Center in Owego. Several $5,000 grants will be going to area fire departments, including those in Berkshire, Nichols, and Richford. Senator Akshar made the announcement at Recreation Park in Binghamton.
