A missing woman from Chenango Bridge in Broome County was identified yesterday as a drowning victim.

A woman from the Town of Chenango who was reported missing from her home on April 8 was identified Thursday as the female found in the Chenango River on Tuesday. Brenda Halpin was identified through fingerprints, according to Broome County Sheriff David Harder. Despite the identification, Harder said the investigation remains open and ongoing, but her case is not considered criminal. Halpin, who was 37 years old, had been afflicted with Huntington’s disease. That limited walking and her ability to care for personal needs. Family members said Halpin had a 9 year old daughter. Her body was partly decomposed when found by a walker along the riverbank in Port Dickinson. Cause of death after an autopsy was listed as drowning, according to Broome County officials.
