Binghamton Police Department responded to a
911 call of a bank robbery at 10:25 a.m. Thursday at the Citizens Bank, 247 Main St., Binghamton. The investigation determined a white male entered the bank through the front door, approached a teller window and gave a note to the teller, which demanded cash. The note threatened the use of a gun, though no gun or other weapon was displayed. The suspect fled the bank before staff surrendered any currency. The suspect exited through the front door and fled by foot, heading east on Main Street.

Upon searching the surrounding area, police detained a male matching a description provided by witnesses. Officers apprehended the suspect near Glenwood Avenue in the area of the Foundry Plaza.
The suspect was identified as PHILIP STEIN (DOB 10-19-57) of 80 Conklin Ave., Apt. 4, Binghamton.
Stein was charged and booked with the following:
– NYS Penal Law offense of Attempted Robbery Third Degree a Class E-Felony.
– Warrant Arrest; Issued by the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision;
Violation of Parole, Conditional Release or Post-Release Supervision
NOT RELATED TO RECENT ROBBERIES
The investigation has determined this attempted robbery is unrelated to last week’s robbery on Feb. 23 at the same bank or the Jan. 10 robbery of the M&T Bank, 149 Robinson St. Both of those robbery cases remain open and active investigations.
The police investigation of today’s attempted robbery is being conducted by the Binghamton Police Detective and Patrol Divisions. The scene and physical evidence was processed by the Binghamton Police Identification / Crime Scene Unit.
