The prosecution began its case in the attempted murder trial of a Binghamton man. A Broome County jury heard the prosecution’s opening statement and began to hear witness testimony. 54-year-old Ralph Townsend, is accused of trying to stab his girlfriend to death. The defense chose not to give an opening statement. In August of 2012, police responded to an apartment at 6 Miles Street. There, they say they found Townsend on top of his girlfriend, stabbing her repeatedly. Police shot Townsend twice in the back to stop him. 39-year-old Eileen Montagno was rushed to the hospital and survived the attack. Townsend is also charged with assault and possession of a weapon.
