The New York Mets have formally announced that Wally Backman has been promoted to be 2011 manager of the Binghamton Mets.
Backman played a key role as an infielder on the Mets 1986 championship team.
He managed the Brooklyn Cyclones last season to an 51-24 record.
The Cyclones made the New York-Penn League Championship Series, where they fell to the Tri-City Valley Cats.
Pitching coach Marc Valdes will join the Binghamton staff from the Savannah Sand Gnats.
Hitting coach Luis Natera returns for his third straight season with the B-Mets.
