The City of Binghamton is ramping up efforts to spur demand for energy efficiency upgrades in homes. The City Council plans to invest $160,000 for the “Energy Leadership Program.”
Modeled after a successful outreach program in Tompkins County, it educates local college students about home energy improvements. The students will in turn go to the homes of local leaders in both the public and private sector, in hopes of convincing them to promote the cause with the people they know.
City officials says it an effort that’ll create jobs, benefit homeowners and the environment.
“These are well paying jobs that support our local contractors. It reduces the carrying cost for our homeowners, reducing the amount of money they send to the utilities and providing more income they can put into our local economies,” said City Community Development Director Tarik Abdelazim.
The City Council is expected to approve the program on Wednesday. If that happens, the program will begin this summer.
