The City of Binghamton has been awarded a $350,000 grant to help in its efforts to revitalize the city’s First Ward.
The state administered grant is part two of a three-part brownfield redevelopment initiative. It will allow for the city to move forward in its overhaul of a 474-acre area in the First Ward neighborhood.
By clearing brownfields, city leaders hope to attract more industry, a move business owners say is needed.
Mayor Matt Ryan says he expects it to take about a year to remediate the 136 brownfields in the area. Afterward, the city will then apply for funds for part three of the program to help implement revitalization strategies.
