A historic pedestrian and bicyclist only bridge in Binghamton could soon have a new name.
Monday night, City Council passed a resolution to rename the South Washington Bridge to the Colonel David Ireland/137th New York Voluntary Infantry Memorial Bridge.
The decision comes after two residents approached council with the idea of honoring Ireland and the Union men who fought in the battle of Gettysburg. They trained in Camp Susquehanna, an area now known as Conklin Ave and west of Telegraph Street. July 1st through 3rd marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. Private funding still needs to be secured to pay for a new sign.
