Binghamton City Council has approved an agreement with Fox 40 WICZ to sell advertising on the front page of the city’s wireless network.
Council brought free wireless to the city with the expectation that advertising revenues would support the operating costs.
Binghamton is one of the few US cities that have a free wireless capability available.
The city currently pays $34,000 per year for the service from local technology firm Plexicomm, LLC in an agreement that expires next year.
Advertising revenues have recouped less than $8,000 in the most recent year for which data is available.
Fox 40 will sell advertising on the wireless front page and will split the revenue with the city. Binghamton will get 70% of the proceeds.
