Former Binghamton High basketball star King Rice has been named the head coach at Monmouth University in New Jersey.
Rice, 41, was a star point guard for Binghamton from 1984 – 1987.
Binghamton had a 85-9 record during his four years at the school.
Rice was recruited by legendary coach Dean Smith to play at the University of North Carolina.
The star point guard led the Tar Heels to the Final Four in 1991.
He ranks third in assists on the school’s career list.
Rice has been an Assistant at Vanderbilt since 2006.
He has previously been an assistant at Providence, Illinois State and Oregon.
Monmouth has been to the NCAA Tournament three times, most recently in 2006.
They have had five straight losing basketball seasons, which led to the coaching change.
Monmouth has produced some world class athletes, most recently Miles Austin, a star wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys.
