The Binghamton City Council is ready to accept a federal grant that will pay for four new police officers.
The $1.13 million grant would put four new officers on patrol starting in January, putting the department’s total number of officers up to 128. 64 of them would be dedicated to patrolling the city.
The grant will cover all the costs of those four new officers for three years, including their salaries, training and benefits.
The city would be required to keep the officers employed for a fourth year.
City Council members are expected to formally accept the grant on Dec. 8.
