By a unanimous vote of the Binghamton Board of Education, Superintendent Marion Martinez has been put on immediate leave for the next 60 days after which her contract will be terminated. Martinez has received many criticisms from teachers, staff, and parents during her three years as superintendent.

A former administrator and physical education teacher, Steve Deinhardt, was appointed as interim superintendent. Deinhardt retired in 2012 after serving as assistant superintendant of administration, as well as the director of health, physical education, and athletics. Deinhardt was also the varsity football coach for Binghamton from 1984 through the year 2000.
