Dozens of animals braved the chilly weather Sunday in a ceremony that is meant to bring pets and their owners together. They gathered at Seton Catholic Central High School in Binghamton for an afternoon of blessings. It was the fourth year of the Blessing of the Animals, an event that honors the Feast day of St. Francis of Assisi in remembrance of his love for all creatures. Officials said the blessing gives pets and their owners peace and harmony, while bringing members of the community together. Father Corey Van Kuren, of Binghamton University’s Newman House, had the honor of blessing each animal. While most of the pets were dogs and
cats, Van Kuren also blessed a bird, hamster and a 29-year-old turtle. The blessing was not limited to any specific religion and all members of the community were invited to come together and share in the experience. This year’s event emphasized love, respect and unity for owners and their pets.
