Investigators have determined that the cause of the fire that destroyed the Ellis Brothers Furniture store in Binghamton will remain unknown. Foul play was never suspected, but the investigation by the Binghamton Fire Marshal’s Office was officially closed this week with no final cause. The fire destroyed the four story building at 162 Water Street back on April 30th, and the building has since been demolished. The fire began in the rear southeast corner of the building inside a maintenance room. According to officials, some of the potential causes include a burned refrigerator extension cord, an oily rag with combustible staining material and power tool batteries recharging. The Ellis family is currently looking into new locations for their store.
