Civilian Patrols a Possibility in Binghamton

After early resistance from the Binghamton Police at the idea of using civilians to help patrol the streets, a few new proposals might get approval.
The Binghamton City Council has been fighting to get more eyes on the streets, and some of the people of Binghamton have volunteered themselves to do the job. The police force isn’t convinced that having untrained citizens on the streets is a good idea. But the council is considering two new options: using interns from Broome Community College to do clerical work, or employ retired police officers on a per diem basis.
Scott Patrick, the President of the Binghamton Police Benevolent Association, says he prefers the second option, because the retirees understand the details required to do the job. Patrick said talks about a solution began after cuts were made to the force, making protecting the community more difficult.
He hopes to have a solution in place by June because crime typically spikes during the summer months.
