Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the passing of Proposition One a “big win for local governments.”
He made a stop in Binghamton Wednesday to celebrate the referendum’s approval. Seven casinos will be built in upstate New York, with up to two in the Southern Tier. Cuomo said upstate casinos could attract the some 50 million tourists that visit New York City every year. More than $20 million is expected to come to the Southern Tier every year according to Cuomo, and that means school aid, property tax relief and local government aid. In the coming months, Cuomo said residents should expect to see some serious progress in getting these casinos up and running. He said he wants to give the potential bidders enough time to get their plans in order.
