A handful of local heroes were honored for their actions Thursday morning.
Eleven residents of the Southern Tier were honored at the 4th Annual Real Heroes Breakfast hosted by the American Red Cross at the Holiday Inn Arena. Owego firefighter Lieutenant Daniel Gavin was honored after he was injured in the January house fire that took fellow fireman Matt Porcari’s life.
Others honored included Michelle Day, a project administrator for the Raymond Corporation. Day trains employees in first aid and CPR and has been part of the corporation’s first aid team for eight years. A Youth Good Samaritan award was given to Demetrius Colvin of Binghamton, after he woke up his entire family when their home caught on fire in December.
All honorees were given a chance to meet fellow hero Jay Price, a teacher, football coach, and volunteer firefighter from New Jersey, who helped save nearly 80 people from flooded homes during Superstorm Sandy.
