A large fire destroyed a collection of buildings collectively known as the Midtown Mall in downtown Binghamton Tuesday night.
The group of five buildings form an “L” shape between Court and Chenango Streets. The blaze was reported around 9:45pm. By the time firefighters arrived, they say heavy fire was raging across several floors of the five-story main building at 17 Chenango St.
The roof of that building collapsed in several places. Two nearby buildings suffered smoke and water damage.
All of the city’s firefighters were called to the scene, along with members of the Johnson City, Endicott and Vestal Fire Departments.
No injuries were reported.
Long Island developer Larry Gladstone is in the process of renovating the Midtown Mall into student housing. It has been vacant since 1981.
Firefighters were at the scene overnight putting out hotspots and assessing damage. Investigators hope to begin looking for a cause Wednesday.
