Miladin Kovacevic, the former Binghamton University basketball player convicted of beating Bryan Steinhauer in a barroom brawl in 2008, has begun to serve his prison sentence in Serbia.
Kovacevic left the US using false travel documents issued by Serbian diplomats, causing a severe strain in relations with the United States.
He is to serve two years, a sentence considered too lenient by US officials and the Steinhauer family.
The diplomats that issued the false passport are in Belgrade awaiting trial. As part of his plea deal, Kovacevik is required to testify against them.
Steinhauer is still recovering from the severe brain injuries he received.
