The investigation continues into what caused the fire that destroyed the Midtown Mall in downtown Binghamton on Tuesday night.
City firefighters spent more than 20 hours at the scene on the corner of Chenango and Court Streets, from when it broke out around 10pm Tuesday through most of Wednesday.
No injuries were reported, but the interior of the Midtown Mall was destroyed and nearby buildings – including the recently renovated Press Building – were left with smoke and water damage.
The Midtown Mall has been vacant since 1981. It was being renovated into student housing.
Officials say the fire does not appear to be suspicious, although they are still investigating. With the amount of damage in the mall, they are not sure if the exact cause will ever be found.
