Below is Mayor Matt Ryan’s comment on the 2010 Census, the first figures of which became available this afternoon, showing that
The 2010 census has had early results released, and the population of the City of Binghamton had lost just four people since 2000, while Broome County as a whole had grown by 64 people.
Binghamton Mayor Ryan issued a statement in which he said that “After several decades of decline, it’s very encouraging that we’re now stabilizing our population, and we can attribute this positive trend to a variety of factors,”.
“We are diversifying our local economy so that it centers on not only manufacturing, but also the research coming our of our educational institutions and health care centers.
We are making our area an even better place to retire and we have received national recognition for this work.
We also have been recognized year after year as one of the country’s most affordable housing markets and one of its most secure cities.
And we are making Greater Binghamton a more attractive place for people to invest in small business and the arts, including young professionals.
None of these efforts would be possible without the commitment of stakeholders across our community, and the Census figures affirm that commitment.
By staying focused on sustainable, regional development, we can continue to strengthen this Valley for years to come.”
