As part of the Prospect Mountain Project, a new bridge is set to open tomorrow. According to the New York State Department of Transportation, the 17 West Bridge is scheduled to open at six o’clock Friday morning. Drivers traveling to Route 17 west and Interstate 81 north will be seeing the biggest changes in their commutes. Once the bridge opens, any drivers heading west toward Johnson City will have to get into the left lane due to a barrier splitting the lanes near the Chenango Street bridge. This is the second of four new bridges which will be opening as part of Phase 1 of the Prospect Mountain Project. The old Route 17 west bridge will be knocked down next week. Beginning at nine o’clock tonight, the DOT will be closing the 17 west bridge for paving, and all westbound traffic will be detoured through Exit 5, the SUNY Broome exit.
