A delegation of mayors from across the state came together in Binghamton Tuesday to urge New York to stop unfunded mandates.
The New York State Conference of Mayors wants Governor-elect Andrew Cuomo to realize that the current path the state is on is not sustainable and that municipalities cannot continue to function without some tax relief.
Cuomo wants to enact a 2 percent property tax cap, which NYCOM supports, but only if it is combined with an elimination of the unfunded mandates. If the mandates continue and a cap is placed on taxes, mayors say municipalities could be forced into bankruptcy.
Cuomo takes over in January.
