From being a witness in criminal complaints to the subject of orders of protection, Aaron Powell is a subject in dozens of police and court records.
The 39-year-old Powell is now sitting in jail, facing his most serious criminal association on record: The murders of his estranged wife, Christina Rumpel Powell and Mario Masciarelli in the town of Binghamton.
Before Powell’s arraignment on murder charges late last month in Town of Binghamton Court, he had already had plenty of interaction with police. Records also show Powell has a history of aggressive behavior. Among the records obtained from City of Binghamton Court were orders of protection against Powell by an ex-girlfriend, who is also the mother of one of his children.
Records show he violated the order of protection multiple times through verbal abuse and threatening physical harm. A friend of the woman’s even filed a complaint of her own, saying Powell was physically abusive to her and threw her to the ground. Powell had also been charged with criminal mischief multiple times, including once scratching his sister’s car after a verbal argument.
Several other police reports cite incidents with Powell’s father, where he’d taken checks and forged his father’s signature. Complaints allege more $1,000 was taken, but charges were never filed. One of those checks was written out to Christina Rumpel Powell in 1997, the only complaint where her name appeared. Other records show Powell was a witness or provided supporting information or depositions for multiple burglaries, assaults and domestic incidents.
Powell is currently in Broome County Jail without bail on two counts of murder in the second degree awaiting further court action.
