State Police: Wrong-Way Driver on Route 17 Avoids Head-On Crash with Tractor Trailer

On Tuesday at approximately 8:41 a.m., New York State Police at Endwell responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on State Highway 17 east between exits 71 and 72 in the city of Binghamton.

A trooper was in the area when Broome County 911 received numerous calls of a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes on Route 17 and sideswiped a tractor trailer. An investigation revealed that an 86-year-old woman was traveling the wrong way in the passing lane directly into the path of a tractor trailer, whose driver took evasive action but was unable to completely miss the woman’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. The names of the woman driver or the truck driver were not released by State Police. The accident remains under investigation.
