The cause of the fire that ripped through the Midtown Mall in Binghamton last month is still undetermined.
Fire tore through all five floors of the building, which has been vacant for the last 20 years and was being renovated into student housing. Flames also damaged nearby buildings in downtown Binghamton.
The city’s fire marshal confirms that construction workers had been smoking on the premises earlier that day and a torch was also being used at the site, but there is no way to determine if either of those contributed to starting the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Engineers were at the Midtown Mall on Friday to determine the structural stability of the buildings. The mall’s owner says he plans to finish the renovations.
