A historic theater in Binghamton was sold at auction Tuesday.
An anonymous buyer purchased the Strand Theater for $22,000. The winning bid shocked many of the 50 or so in attendance for the auction, as it’s estimated that the building needs millions of dollars in repairs to be operational again.
The Strand Theater opened on Chenango Street in the 1920s for vaudeville shows and later turned to movies. It closed as a theater in 1980 and has been vacant for six years since the last business, a restaurant, moved out.
The auction lasted only around 10 minutes before the winning bid was accepted.
