Officials at Lourdes Hospital say some veterans might be able to receive care through the Veterans Choice Program.
Lourdes and other Catholic hospitals affiliated with Ascension have been authorized to provide primary care, inpatient and outpatient specialty care, and mental health care for eligible veterans.
In 2014, Congress passed legislation to fund some private health care services at sites other than the traditional Veterans Administration hospitals.
The choice for veterans is strictly voluntary.
Lourdes president Kathy Connerton said the local hospital is pleased to provide medical care to veterans, saying it’s not only the responsibility of the VA but also a task for all caregivers, whether government or private, profit or nonprofit.
